About Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a system of medicine with historical roots in the Indian subcontinent. The term“Ayurveda” – itself translates to knowledge of life.

Ayurveda – is the science which imparts knowledge about life, it describes life as happy and unhappy life; wholesome and unwholesome life; long & short life. It provides abundant material to enhance, maintain, protect & preserve life of human beings. their properties, actions as promoting and demotes the longevity.

Ayurveda encourages various lifestyle interventions medicinal therapies to regain a balance between the body, mind, spirit and the environment. It works and offers a traditional holistic healing method that is a combination of dietary regimen, daily regimen, sadavrutta (daily morals to be adhered to), shodhana therapies (Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Raktamokshana and Nasya etc.); shastra karma (operative procedures) and various other medications to cure diseases as well as to prevent of any kind of illness & to maintain healthy life of individual.

Ayurveda as a science is a socio-economic development tool as it provides employment benefit not only to ayurveda students, but also to other people like pharmacists, cultivators, panchkarma therapists, yoga practitioner, farmers, software developer, cooks etc. It ensures the motto – ‘Lives with Livelihoods’.

    स्वस्थस्य स्वास्थ्य रक्षणं, आतुरस्य ववकार प्रशमनं|
  1. Health according to ayurveda is – The balance of Dosha (humors), Agni (digestive power) Dhatu (tissues), Mala (excretory system) along with happy state of Atma (soul), Indriya (special senses) & Mana (conscious).
  2. समदोषः समाग्ननश्च समधातुमलक्रिय: |
    प्रसन्नत्मेंद्रियमनाः स्वस्थ इत्यभिधीयते ||

All of these things develop harmony with a constructive principal of nature on physical, mental, spiritual, social and moral planes of human being & thus Ayurveda system works by improving one’s vitality & helps to modulate immunity to be used as a preventive mechanism to lead a healthy & hearty life.
    Ayurveda as a medical science is a highly comprehensive system of medicine that deals with eight different clinical specialties namely as
    1. Kayachikitsa (General / Internal Medicine)
    2. Shalya Tantra (Surgery)
    3. Shalakya Tantra (Ophthalmology, Oto-Rhino-Laryngology and Oro-Dentistry)
    4. Kaumarabhritya (Obstetrics and Pediatrics)
    5. Agada Tantra (Clinical Toxicology)
    6. Bhuta Vidya (Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry)
    7. Rasayana (Preventive, Promotive, Rejuvenative Medicine and Gerontology, Geviatrior)
    8. Vajikarana (Reproductive Medicine and Epigenetics)
    These together constitute the “Ashtanga Ayurveda” as mentioned in Samhita (ancient ayurveda textbooks).

About Course

Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (B.A.M.S.) is an undergraduate programme in Ayurveda that primarily deals with imparting knowledge of Ayurvedic medicine and surgical techniques to students enrolled in this course. Admission to this course is post clearing the National Eligibilitycum- Entrance Test (NEET) examination. After the process of counseling is conducted, then admission is granted to eligible students. The BAMS course is regulated by National Council for Indian System of Medicine [NCISM], New Delhi.

The duration of the course is 4.5 years of teaching and 1 year compulsory rotatory internship.The total duration is thus 5.5 years.

Presently, as mandated by NCISM from the year 2021-22, the students admitted in BAMS course will have three durations of 1.5 years each as an academic year. So, 1st academic professional year is of 1.5 years, 2nd professional year is of 1.5 years and 3rd professional year is of 1.5 years.

For this total duration the students will undergo training in 20 different subjects under 14 departments. Post completion of this academic training, the students will have to undergo compulsory internship in rotation mode. The main aim of internship is to acclimatize the BAMS graduates with thorough clinical knowledge required to practice the profession of Ayurveda as physician & surgeon at undergraduate level. In this period the students will have to take case of the patients, administer medications, do minor operative procedures and assist in major surgeries, work in the In Patient Department [IPD], perform Panchkarma therapies like Abhyanga, Swedana, Vaman, Virechana, Basti, Raktamokshan, Nasya, etc. In modern parlance the students will get regular clinical practice of clinical examination of patients, administer IV/IM/SC medications, performing general bed side procedures like Pleural tapping, feeding tube & Ryle’s tube insertion, Foley’s catheterization, IV-line insertion, vaccination camps, Blindness camps, Tubectomy camps, sterilization procedures, conducting ante-natal, Natal and post-natal care, etc.

After completion of this internship the Gujarat Ayurveda University, Jamnagar [we are affiliated with this university] will grant and award graduate degree of Ayurvedacharya - Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (B.A.M.S.) in the Convocation ceremony. All the BAMS graduates have to register themselves at the concerned State Registration board for their registration certificates. Registration is mandatory to practice as an Ayurveda physician.

Aims & Objectives

The course aims at providing basic education in Ayurveda leading to the degree of B.A.M.S. It aims at preparing graduates of profound scholarship in the science of Ayurveda having basic and fundamental knowledge in different subjects of Ayurveda backed up by extensive practical training. He should become an efficient teacher, a research scholar and a competent Ayurvedic physician (Kayachikitsaka) and surgeon (Shalya chikitsaka) to be able to contribute his mite in the medical and health services of the Country.

Duration

5½ years (Including one year internship).

Eligibility

  • Must have passed higher secondary school certificate examination after 12 years of schooling with physics, chemistry and biology subjects. Knowledge of Sanskrit is essential for the admission. Must pass out Sanskrit either in 10 (SSC) or 12 (HSC).
  • Any other equivalent course recognized by the Government and State education Board.

Qualifying Age

Must have completed 17 years as on 31st December of year of admission to the main course.
